How should one find a mentor when they don't have college alumni or any acquaintance as such who's gone through this process successfully?

Why Most of the IAS Selected student from IIT ?

I am from an IIT. So, I think I may be able to address it. Firstly, I don't think it has anything to do with IIT. There are other top colleges of this country from where you can find good number of civil servants. This does include Stephens, Hindu from DU, JNU, IIMs etc.

Now, let me try to see why these students are most seen in the list. Firstly, I believe they have a network of alumni who are in civil services and thus have easy access to guidance and help needed. Secondly, they form an easy network among themselves to prepare. It helps them all. Thirdly, resources are easier to get. They also have some kind of job security generally due to which they take the risk to drop out and prepare.

But that shouldn't discourage anyone else. Today, the digital world is opening up opportunities for everyone. Network if available. Selected candidates are approachable on online platforms like this one, quora, instagram as well as twitter. Resources are available on youtube and many other free websites. So, I think one should focus on that.
